Now that we have quite a bit of a community here, and now that the community is making an effort to get more attention for this issue, I feel a brief word on image and presentation is needed. The Tribunale di Roma recently ruled that an IP address is insufficient evidence to identify an individual. During preliminary investigations of a file-sharing copyright infringement complaint, the district attorney and the judge considered that the mere ownership of the connection from which the offence was committed was not sufficient to establish the liability of defendants, especially since the alleged infringement may have been committed by other people. The Swiss newspaper Le Matin has an interesting article about Logistep data tracking. There seems to be some controversy between the Swiss Data Protection officer and the Swiss federal court which unfortunately seems to have ended up with Logistep being allowed to continue harvesting the IP address of Swiss internet users. An interesting tidbit from the forums, spotted by zerot: The stock photos used on the ACS:Law website front page are from the popular royalty-free stock photo site stock.xchng. However, even royalty-free images often have certain license requirements. Compare and contrast:  The license of this image requires you to notify and credit the owner when using the photo for any public work. Excellent news segment on You and Yours about this issue today. Interestingly enough, Crossley seems to believe that IP addresses can not be spoofed. Once again, the description of the process used to gather evidence was very vague, followed by the usual bluster about how freaking awesome and irrefutable the evidence was. Welcome to the new look of Being Threatened. Hopefully the lighter look and the reorganisation of the information will soothe the minds of people fretting over those pesky claim letters.It looks like the ACS:Law website has been updated. The contact page still mentions the old address at Hanover Square, oddly enough, but Nicola Beale has been removed:"ACS Law Solicitors is the trading style of Andrew J. Crossley, Sole Principal."

 Nicola Beale seems to have dropped off the ACS:Law letterhead. Apparently she is no longer a partner in ACS:Law - this was confirmed by an employee at their new office address.
While you're searching for Nicola, keep an eye out for ACS:Law's actual offices. While their mailling adress (83 Victoria Street in London) is where they receive their mail and hold occasional meetings/interviews, it seems that the hard graft of writing, printing, envelope-stuffing and posting those nice letters takes ...
